Hindu people have one of the world’s more well known first haircut traditions… a ceremony called the Mundan ceremony. Hindu babies receive their first haircut in the first or third year of life. The tradition is to shave the baby’s head clean (sometimes a clump of hair is left at the back of the head). Shaving can often be hard on such delicate skin; a paste of turmeric and sandalwood is often applied to the head to soothe. As part of the ceremony friends and family come to bless the child as well. In china, it’s believed that there are favorable days every year for a baby to get his or her first haircut. The tradition itself of baby’s first haircut is to remove the hair that was grown in the womb. To do so, all of the hair except what is on the top of crown is shaved. The cut hair is then tied with a red string and made into a keepsake, sewn into a pillow (which is believed to help calm the baby), or it’s made into a special calligraphy brush with engraved wishes of wellness and happiness.
