All over the world different cultures have different customs and traditions. A baby’s first haircut is something that people everywhere cherish, the only difference is exactly how it’s cherished…
Hindu people have one of the world’s more well known first haircut traditions… a ceremony called the Mundan ceremony. Hindu babies receive their first haircut in the first or third year of life. The tradition is to shave the baby’s head clean (sometimes a clump of hair is left at the back of the head). Shaving can often be hard on such delicate skin; a paste of turmeric and sandalwood is often applied to the head to soothe. As part of the ceremony friends and family come to bless the child as well.
